111. Writer Padmabhushan; movie review

WRITER PADMABHUSAN
Cert 12A
123 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent moderate bad language

Having earned my living through the written word for more than 40 years, I keep thinking it is high time that I tried writing a book.
Indeed, I even have two subjects which I know would make perfect material.
However, the fear of failure looms so large that my author's pen remains constipated.
Thus, fair play to Padmabhushan (Suhas), an assistant librarian who has given all his energies to publishing a novel.
The problem is that it is not very good and, consequently, is not moving from the shelves. Indeed, he can't even give copies away.
Imagine his surprise, therefore, when he and his parents are invited to the home of his childhood crush (Tina Shilparaj) to discuss marriage on the back of his fantastic book.
Writer Padmabhushan is light-hearted with some very serious points in its tail.
Suhas makes an amiable lead, dreaming through life until faced with having to live up to his own billing, so he can wed his ideal girl.
Meanwhile, Shilparaj provides his conscience and common sense as his potential fiancee and Ashish Vidyarthi is a winner as a father who seems perpetually bamboozled at the antics of everyone around him.
It is also worth watching out for Rohini as Padmabhushan's mother - the movie's rock.
For me, Shanmukha Prasanth's film lacked the belly laughs the makers might have wanted but did elicit a fair few chuckles.
And it might have even inspired me to stop sitting on my hands and write that book!

Reasons to watch: Intriguing romance
Reasons to avoid: A tad too convoluted

Laughs: Chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Did you know? At 90,000 books per annum, India is the 10th biggest publisher worldwide. The top three are the USA, China and the UK.

The final word.  Suhas:  “I would recommend that youngsters take their parents along to watch the movie. There will be a few twists and turns. The director ensured that there is enough entertainment to make everyone laugh.” The Hindu
