I had high hopes when I saw that Haley Bennett and Sam Riley were among the cast for She Is Love.
But, in my opinion, this is another film with fine acting but a disappointingly weak storyline.
The premise is interesting - a couple (Riley and Marisa Abela) run a Cornish hotel at which the owner's former wife has unwittingly booked in as a guest.
The opening scenes recount the awkward surprise of the divorced husband (Riley) and his rather tense ex-spouse (Bennett).
The encounter also sparks jealousy in the former's current love.
Jamie Adams' film never leaves the confines of the house and its gardens as more layers are peeled back from this unfortunate trio.
She Is Love is a good-looking movie, both in terms of its protagonists and its backdrop but I was left with two central problems.
Firstly, its characters are selfish, egotistical and, consequently, not very likeable. Thus, I struggled to be invested in any of them.
Secondly, the dialogue doesn't reveal enough about the trio's history. It feels as if the key lies between what is unsaid.
Either way, I admired the acting but was disappointed by the lack of substance.
PS Fun fact - I went to school with Marisa Abela's dad, a very long time ago!

Did you know? When Haley Bennett was 18, she persuaded her mother to take her to Los Angeles for three months to pursue an acting career. As she was about to return home, she falsely told an agent she had already been offered a contract elsewhere and he refused to lose her so signed her up.
The final word. Jamie Adams: "She is Love is a film about second chances, about bumping into the “one that got away” and opening up in a way that wasn’t possible ten years ago, when immaturity and naivety would steer the conversation toward anger and fear and insecurity."
